The stage was set for the biggest EuroMillions draw ever, with a jackpot of €190 million (£170 million) that was guaranteed to be paid out. It was the 1,257th draw since the game launched in 2004, but only the second time ever that a Must Be Won draw had been held.
One lucky UK player ended up matching all five winning numbers and both Lucky Stars, becoming the biggest lottery winner in the UK's history and equalling the record for the largest EuroMillions prize ever won. It was only the fourth time that the maximum jackpot had been paid out, and the first time in two years.
The jackpot would have rolled down to players in the tier below if there had not been a winner. As it was, the four ticket holders who matched five main numbers plus one Lucky Star still won £3.6 million (€5.2 million) each thanks to the rolldown of funds caused by the jackpot cap.
There were more than 61 million entries purchased for the draw and more than 4.8 million of those tickets won prizes. The jackpot win ended a record run of 22 rollovers stretching back to 19th July.
