€72 Million EuroMillions Jackpot Won in Austria

After having rolled over only four times, the €72.1 million jackpot was won last night on Tuesday, 1st August. The prize is going to Austria and it is the largest EuroMillions jackpot ever won there.

The winning numbers were 25, 27, 35, 40 and 45, with Lucky Stars 7 and 11. In total, there were over one million winners across different prize categories, so you should check your tickets to see if you are one of them as well.

There isn’t a single player that will claim the entire prize. According to Austrian press outlets, the mega win will be split between 38 players. This is due to a so-called XXL share certificate, where 38 players have 63 shares of the prize. The XXL share certificate allows you to buy one of the 63 shares in the 378 picks for €15.20. Each share is worth approximately €1.1 million. Four of the winners have five shares each, meaning the prize will multiply and they will collect around €5.7 million individually.

So where exactly is the prize going? Nine shares (seven winners) go to Vienna, twelve (five winners) to Vorarlberg, eleven (seven winners) to Upper Austria, eight (four winners) to win2day, five (five winners ) to Lower Austria, four (two winners) to Salzburg, eight (two winners) to Styria, three (three winners) to Tyrol, two to Burgenland and one to Carinthia.

Unlike other countries where the claiming period is usually less than a year, the lucky Austrian players will have three years to claim their prizes.

Austria’s Win History

In total, the EuroMillions jackpot has been won 18 times in Austria, most recently five years ago by a player from Mostviertel who collected €45.4 million. But that wasn’t the biggest win (before the one from last night)—a Carinthian won €55.6 million in 2008. If you’re curious to see Austria’s EuroMillions jackpot history, you can check out some statistics we’ve put together over the years since the lottery was first launched.

Austria's biggest jackpot to date is not even half of the biggest EuroMillions jackpot ever won. On 19th July 2022, a UK player won €230 million. They claimed their money quickly but they decided to remain anonymous.

The jackpot has now been reset to €17 million (£14 million) and it could soon be yours. EuroMillions draws take place on Tuesday and Friday evenings and you too can enter for a chance to win.
