Lawrence Coates, who lives in York, England, has been playing the lottery in the UK for thirteen years. The 57 year old joiner initially thought that he had won just £110 by matching four numbers, but when he went back to check his ticket a second time, he realised he had actually matched five.

“It was the Saturday after the draw when I checked my ticket on the computer,” Lawrence explained. “At first I thought I had four – which pleased me – but then I realised I had five. I was in shock! I woke my wife, Carole, to tell her the news, but she didn’t believe me until she had checked the numbers for herself!”

Lawrence and Carole are now planning to spend some time visiting relatives in Australia. They also intend to treat their six grandchildren with some of their winnings.

“We had already made plans to visit my step-daughter and grandchildren in Australia,” Lawrence said, “but the win has meant that we could go and book the tickets straight away without worrying about how to afford them. That is a great feeling!”

Carole is 61 and has already retired. Although Lawrence has said that he won’t be giving up work himself in the near future, he too is now looking forward to retiring.

“I just feel so lucky that I can look forward to a happy retirement and treat the kids and grandchildren at the same time,” he said. “Not having to worry about bills is fantastic – it just lifts that weight from our shoulders.”

The main EuroMillions numbers for the draw held on Friday 22 February were 4, 27, 32, 46 and 50, and the Lucky Stars were 8 and 9.
