David checked his numbers on the night of the draw – a habit that all EuroMillions players would do well to adopt – and when he did so he discovered that he was one of thirteen second-tier prize winners.
“I had just worked a really long day, from dawn to dusk,” David said. “When I finally got home I checked the numbers on Teletext and couldn’t believe what I was seeing! I rang round my family and friends to tell them the great news. They wouldn’t believe me at first, they thought I was joking!”
The jackpot for the draw on Friday 9 January, 2009 was worth £50 million. Although David wasn’t quite lucky enough to win that amount, his six-figure fortune was certainly large enough to put a smile on his face. The win also helped to bring relief to a challenging work and home situation. As well as having a ten month old child with his girlfriend Bev, David had previously been made redundant from his job.
“It was difficult being laid off, especially just before Christmas,” David explained, “so I decided to work as a self-employed street lamp cleaner to help make ends meet. This win is a great start to the New Year for us and gives us much needed stability. We celebrated by having a couple of friends round for a glass of champagne.”
