The syndicate is run by Emma Crawford, the pub’s landlady, who freely admits that she isn’t always on the ball when it comes to finding out how the team’s numbers have performed: “I’ve got a bit of a reputation for being a bit slow at checking our tickets, sometimes not getting around to it until a few months later!” the 47-year-old told reporters.
Luckily for Emma, she examined the winning entry just four days after the draw, meaning that it was a Valentine’s Day to remember for the pub owner and her punters. She told reporters she didn’t know what possessed her to check the numbers on her EuroMillions app on that particular day, but she was glad she did.
“There was a stack of tickets on the side in the kitchen and I popped the chicken in the oven, picked up my phone and scanned the top ticket all in one move,” explained Emma, who was busy preparing a romantic meal. “It just so happened the top ticket was worth £187,109.80!”
In a state of utter disbelief, Emma rushed downstairs and burst into the bar, demanding that someone confirm the win. Her sister and then partner Chris Oakley quickly grabbed the phone before informing Emma that she needed to contact the UK National Lottery immediately. Once the win had been verified, the publican wasted no time in ringing the remaining members of the successful syndicate, screaming down the phone: “We’ve won the lottery!”
The collective, who purchased their winning entry from Tesco Express in Grays, have been playing EuroMillions together for almost three years, taking part in both Tuesday and Friday draws. Dream holidays, fast cars and even a new kitchen are now all on the menu for this syndicate of 16.
